What is Mindfulness?
Minfulness is a concept that signifies a higher level of concious awareness. It is often described as a state of “being” as opposed to “doing” which involves observing external events aswell as internal experiences as they occur.
Mindfulness has been described as:
“Paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally… it is an appreciation for the present moment and the cultivation of an intimate relationship with it through a continual attending to it with care and discernment.” (Kabat-Zinn, 1994: 8–9).
Extensive research on Mindfulness has shown that it can benefit our physical and mental well being in multiple ways, including: stress reduction, alleviation of anxiety and depression, reduced fatigue and increase vitality, improving concentration and performance, and increased resilience. It can also help in managing a variety of health issues, including pain, eating problems, sleep disturbances, high blood pressure, asthma, and even skin disorders.
Our Introduction to Mindfulness blog will provide more information and check out our Mind Additional Resources page for anyone wishing to learn more or take their practice of mindfulness further.
